July 30, 2017: Please read the t UPDATES & fasting protocol. The raw food diet helped me but I did not fast while doing it which I am sure would have been beneficial and would helped. Dr. Cousens does put his patients on a fasting protocol.
July 30, 2017 UPDATE: In August 2016 after a period of great stress, the vegan food diet stopped working for me. My sugars were up again. I ended up on insulin with bad side effects (overnight weight gain of 12 pounds in a month and horrible joint aches on my entire body). I am now following a high fat, moderate protein, low carb diet (Diet doctor.com) along with regular fasting (Dr. Jason Fung, Toronto based nephrologist) with great results. Here is a link to get his book on fasting. I still eat a lot of vegetarian food but modified with moderate protein/ low carb/ high fat (LCHF). I seldom need to take insulin.
Feb 13, 2018 UPDATE: Just got my lab results back and my Hemoglobin A1C had gone down to just within the normal range. My fasting sugars went down 40 points! My cholesterol levels are also totally normal. It can only get better. I will write a longer post as soon as I collect sufficient data. Do something that works for you that you can stick to.
May 2014: Though this was set up as a recipe blog, I thought I would take a page here to tell you about an amazing milestone for me. Thanks for reading especially if you make it to the end. I need to share this story about how cured myself of my diabetes with help from Dr. Cousens book! Please pass it on.
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in September 2004. It does not run in my family nor did I have a bad diet. I ate really well, all organic, sprouted grains, lentils, grass-fed meat and did not eat processed food. As a family, we spent long hours preparing meals. I also exercised regularly and am not over weight.
How did I end up with diabetes? The shortened version is this. I had hemorrhagic pancreatitis as a reaction to medication I was on back in 1993 and had to have two surgeries where they took out a fair bit of my pancreas. I recovered from the pancreatitis but was told that I would eventually become diabetic and would need insulin. The pancreas as you may know, produces insulin. Back then, I was resigned to my fate as the doctors had predicted, even willing to go on insulin.
After a stressful period in 2004, I was distressed to learn that I had to be on medication for diabetes. I tried looking up every home remedy and googled holistic cures for diabetes with no real treatments in sight. In the fall of 2013, my GP told me that I needed to bring my sugars down as my cholesterol levels were high, probably related to the high diabetes. Diabetes medication, my good diet and exercise could not help lower my medication. What would? I did not want to go on insulin. That I was sure of.
My fasting sugars were about 215 mg/dl (12 mmol/l ). The normal persons fasting blood sugars ideally are between 70 mg/dl (3.9 mmol/L) and 92 mg/dl (5.0 mmol/L)
My bed time sugars also ran high, about 270 mg/dl (15 mmol/l ). I knew I had to change something fast and hoped the answer would come to me.
In December, 2013 friends came for dinner who ate only raw vegan food because of health issues. I was encountering many people over the years who were vegan and thought it must be the new thing! I was such a snob about vegan food. At dinner, I said “If this diet can cure me of my diabetes, I will do it”. They told me to watch the movie Simply Raw on You Tube. That led me to the book: There is a Cure for Diabetes by Dr. Gabriel Cousens, MD. He is the founder of the Tree of Life Foundation. Dr. Cousens has cured many people of their diabetes within 30 days on his program. Most people he treats are off their medications in the first week. He suggests a high fat, low carb, raw food vegan diet for the first month and gradually eases people into cooked high fat/ low carb vegan foods. He stresses the importance of getting good fats in your diet.
After watching the video, I was absolutely determined that I could do this. I learnt a few years back that my pancreas could still produce insulin, so that was good news. I decided not to talk with my GP as most doctors I meet including my close doctor friends and family, don’t have good knowledge of preparing foods and nutrition or even support being off medication! I adore my GP, who is actually really supportive of my reluctance to be over medicated and I wanted to surprise her with my test results after this program. (It is advised that you talk with your doctor before starting this diet).
I had many things in place: a good blender, a dehydrator, knowledge of sprouting foods, recipes which came with Dr. Cousens book and access to my incredible spices to make whatever I ate yummy. I knew that I would have to quit caffeine, dairy, sugar, flour, and meat. The hardest thing was quitting my black chai. I used to drink about 4 cups a day. I had headaches for the first 4 days and craved it for 10 days. I noticed by week 3, I was ok without it and loving all the Rooibos chai blends I made.
I started the raw food vegan diet on March 21, 2014 and four days later I went off all my medications. I tested my sugars 4 to 5 times a day for the first month. I saw results of my blood sugars going down by the end of the first day! By the second week, my fasting blood sugars were 77.4 mg/dl (4.3 mmol/L) and in the normal range. My bed time sugars were also in the normal range around 108 mg/dl (6 mmol/L)
Today is day 52 of this diet. Since I had diabetes for 10 years before this diet, it is suggested to be on the raw vegan diet for 3 months. I stopped craving all the foods that I used to eat. Suddenly this became a new way of life for me. The only support I relied on was inner myself. I knew that I would be surrounded by food and I had to remember the end result that I was after. I do now drink half a cup of black chai a day and my blood sugars are fine! (That is my only little allowance).
What I find incredible besides the fact that I am not on medications for diabetes, is that I get to eat as much as I want and eat way more now that I ever did before! Since it is important to always have snacks ready so I don’t eat the first thing in sight when hungry, I spend a few hours each week making spreads, crackers and even desserts that are not high in sugars. I use Stevia and Yacon Syrup as sugar substitutes. I also need to think ahead when I will be away- green juices and smoothies rock for on the road! I have so much more energy now than before and my mind is so clear. It used to often be in a fog from all those high sugars. I sleep much better and the insomnia I had on and off is better. In reading Dr. Cousens book, I found that a good vegan diet cures a host of other ailments as well.
I practised daily meditation that helped me stay grounded through this process which was not always easy as food is everywhere!
Yes, folks, There is a Cure for Diabetes!
UPDATE: After exactly 6 months on this diet, I had blood work done and my fasting sugars, HbA1C as well as Cholestrol levels were all in the normal range.
